What It’s About

Alex loves the library. It’s quiet, orderly, and full of books—everything a true book-lover could want. But when Mrs. Reed announces that monsters have invaded, Alex’s sanctuary erupts into chaos. These creatures throw books, scribble on pages, and break every rule in sight. Unless Alex can wrangle them into shape, the library might be shut down for good.

Why It Stands Out

This is a clever, high-energy tribute to libraries and the magic of reading. Stephanie M. Bearce and Jeanie Ransom take a simple idea—monsters causing mayhem—and turn it into a fast-paced, funny adventure with a subtle lesson about respecting books and shared spaces.

There’s even a hint of mystery in Alex’s quest to figure out what’s causing all the chaos and how to solve the problem—an element that ties beautifully to Bearce’s own love of mysteries.

About the Illustrations

The first thing that drew me to this book was Jayne Kinne’s adorable artwork. The monsters are a perfect mix of goofy, cute, and mischievous—exactly the kind of characters kids love to spot on every page.

I haven’t read this with Zoey yet, but I already know she’s going to fall in love with these colorful, silly monsters. They’re just too much fun not to adore!

For Readers

Ages 4–8. A great pick for school or library story times, or for kids who can’t resist a mix of giggles, problem-solving, and gentle life lessons.

For Writers

Library Monsters is a masterclass in how to deliver a message without losing the fun. The authors use humor, character voice, and escalating stakes to keep the story moving, all while sneaking in a subtle lesson about respecting books and shared spaces.

Beyond the Story

I have a soft spot for books that make libraries feel magical. Growing up, the library was my favorite kind of adventure—a place where you never knew what story you’d stumble into next. Library Monsters captures that feeling perfectly, with a dash of monster mischief to keep kids laughing and engaged.

I had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie Bearce during a presentation on writing mysteries, and she is every bit as fun and charming as her stories. You can feel her joy for storytelling and love of books woven into every page of this one. She even offers a free teacher’s guide for Library Monsters on her website, filled with creative lesson plans and activities that bring the story to life.
